Dunpender Community Council News: October 2021

News from Dunpender CC October 2021

We had our first proper meeting since March 2020 in the Stables on 2nd September and it was really good to meet up again.

We have all put ourselves forward for the next four years of Community Council apart from Colin McWhannell who has decided not to stand again. We thank Colin for his time over the past few years when it has been difficult for any of us to achieve very much.

Residents are concerned about the speed of vehicles along Drylaw Terrace and the High Street. This is made worse by the number of tractors, busy harvesting, which appear to go a lot faster than 20mph. We have requested a pop-up policeman to be put in position a few times and extra 20 signs have been put on lampposts. Unfortunately our Speed Reactive sign, purchased in 2009 with a grant of some kind, has proved beyond repair so we have applied to the Dunbar Area Partnership for funds to buy a new one.

Whitekirk will also be getting a Speed Reactive sign thanks to a successful £5000 application to North Berwick AP by DCC member Eric Martin.

We have revisited the problem of the narrow pavement by the graveyard on Preston Road and ELC Transportation has confirmed that traffic lights are the only solution. If the road was to be made single carriageway with a priority system, regulations state that there is not enough space for vehicles to see oncoming traffic on either side of the bend and stop in time. A funding proposal for demand responsive traffic lights, a wider pavement and cycle path will be put forward in next yearís ELC budget and plans are being drawn up.

East Linton station has now been granted Planning permission so work should be able to start soon. Following loud protests from politicians, RAGES members and all of you who wrote to object, the 2022 LNER service cuts at Dunbar have been postponed. Furthermore, from December 2021, TransPennine†Express will provide five new services per weekday in each direction.†These Edinburgh/Newcastle trains will call at Berwick, Reston, Dunbar (four northbound, five southbound), and East Linton when it opens. †An additional two Edinburgh to Berwick services will be introduced at the May 2022 timetable change. †These trains will call at Reston and East Linton.

At a meeting held in Tyninghame Village Hall on 23rd August ELC confirmed the strategy being followed was to restrict numbers at Tyninghame Links in order to protect the estuary and salt marshes. It was also confirmed that the Countryside Rangers are opposed to the Steading development due to a potential increase in visitor numbers.

Eight new seasonal rangers have been employed this summer and ELC feels that visitor numbers seemed to better managed this year due to co-operation between rangers and police and the opportunity to speak to campers. An app is under development to better direct visitors to less crowded beaches if car parks are full.

DCC members Anne Pearson and Robert Russel have written a super new leaflet for visitors: What to do in East Linton if you have 30, 60 or 90 minutes to spare. Itís full if interesting information and photos and will be free to pick up in our hotels, cafes and shops.

The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on 14th Oct in the Stables, Preston Road, a week later than usual. Minutes and agenda will be available as usual on our website www.eastlinton.uk.com.
